The goal of this course is to educate participants in the principles and practice of Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) for radar and communications systems. At the conclusion of these modules you will have an understanding of the theory behind ELINT and be able to apply it in practical scenarios. This includes estimating radar performance from ELINT, using it to develop countermeasures, and hacking communications channels. This course is composed of six modules designed with a progressive approach to learning the principles and practice of ELINT. As a result it is recommended they be taken in order.

Session 1: Introduction to ELINT
This module introduces the principles of ELINT for radar and communications systems, along with the basics of ELINT systems. The focus then switches to radar and how a systems design leads to certain performance criteria. This serves as the foundation used to estimate radar performance using ELINT.
Session 2: ELINT Sensors
This module focuses on ELINT sensors, their components and applications. Antennas for EW systems are discussed, along with ELINT receivers which leads into a discussion of direction finding. The module concludes with a lesson on probability of intercept and how it affects the performance of ELINT sensors.
Session 3: Radar Waveforms
ELINT is primarily gathered by measuring a received waveform from a threat radar. This module provides a detailed discussion of these radar waveforms, from conventional pulses radar to modern low probability of intercept radar signals.
Session 4: Applying Radar ELINT
This module covers the analysis of signals to produce ELINT for estimating radar performance and creating countermeasures. A detailed demonstration of how to measure radar signals to quantify the various parameters that form a pulse descriptor word is provided, including understanding antenna scan patterns. The process of estimating radar performance using ELINT is then reviewed, followed by a discussion of ELINT data files.
Session 5: Advanced Radar ELINT
This module surveys advanced topics in radar ELINT including identifying radar jamming waveforms and their characteristics, deinterleaving pulse trains, and determining ELINT parameter limits. Electronic protection methods in radar are also explored, along with their effects on ELINT.
Session 6: Communications ELINT
The focus of this module is on gathering and exploiting the technical intelligence associated with wireless communications systems. This is the first step prior to gathering communications intelligence or COMINT. Wireless communications links are introduced with a focus on digital modulations. The ELINT process is then demonstrated for a wireless signal, demonstrating how to “hack” a communications channel.
